Juvenile Court Program

Juvenile Detention Center

The Juvenile Detention Center's mission is to provide a physically and emotionally safe and secure environment for juveniles placed temporarily by the court and to provide youth with the opportunity to learn new skills that will enable them to contribute to the community when they leave. The Detention Center has a capacity of 30 juveniles. Juveniles are held in Detention primarily because:

  1. There is reason to believe that if released they would cause harm to other persons
  2. There is reason to believe that if released they would be unavailable for further court proceedings
  3. They have been found to be in violation of a valid court order and rules of supervision

The majority of juveniles (approx. 75%) are held in Detention primarily while their court process and disposition is pending.

Policies

In order to ensure that all juveniles understand expectations for their behavior and in order to have a system where staff can gauge how well a juvenile is functioning, all juveniles will be familiarized with the level system.  The level system is a reporting mechanism that illustrates how individual residents are doing in a group setting.

The level system allows staff to record and observe each juvenile's attitude and behavior.  However, it may be difficult to gauge juveniles' attitudes by solely using the level system.  The combination of reading the juvenile's files, the staff log, incident reports, detention behavioral court report, and individual staff relationships with each juvenile provides a better gauge in defining attitude.
